Be A Gift

When it comes to the artistry of burlesque, everyone thinks about a beautiful woman with curves like Jessica Rabbit, Josephine Baker, and Dita Von Teese. Glamour and opulence are the backbones of burlesque in my opinion. However, as a mentor and performer, I also focus on the heartbeat of burlesque. You must learn to be a gift to the audience. Inspire someone with your imperfections and resilience. When I create a new burlesque act my initial focus is on the musicality, glamour, and choreography. Then, I push myself to master the art of striptease. I want to take the striptease element to the next level! You can’t merely take off your clothes without purpose and intention! When I strip, I want to strip down to my soul so the audience can go on a journey with me. For example, when I bare my skin by taking off a glove, I am showing off my brown skin. I’m saying look at my brown skin! The skin that teachers, family, and my peers made fun of every day when I was a child! Look at me now! I am celebrating that which was once ugly to me. If I can do it, so can you! You can celebrate your body and resilience! Every move you make needs to tell a story or be an act of motivation! I want people to understand that burlesque can also be a healing exchange between the artist and audience. It’s important to be polished and sexy during your performances, however, I believe it’s important to push yourself beyond the obvious way to “strip”. Bare your soul! Be a beautiful imperfection! Be a gift to the audience!
